New to GLP-1 medicines, or just starting one? Follow these nine steps in order. Each one links to the two or three articles that answer the questions people ask most at that stage.
Step 1
Understand what GLP-1 medicines are
GLP-1 medicines copy a gut hormone that helps control appetite and blood sugar. Most of the weight loss comes from eating less, not from a faster metabolism. Start with the basics, then see which products are actually FDA-approved for weight management and which are diabetes medicines.
Step 2
Check whether you might qualify
The FDA labels for weight-management GLP-1s cover adults with obesity, or overweight plus a weight-related health condition, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity. Some people should not take them at all. A licensed clinician makes the final call.
Step 3
Work out cost and coverage
In a 2025 clinical-practice study, cost or insurance was the most common reason people stopped treatment within a year. Find out what your plan covers, what prior authorization involves, and what the manufacturers' self-pay prices are before your first visit.
Step 4
Get a prescription the safe way
You need a prescription from a licensed clinician: your primary care clinician, a specialist, or a legitimate telehealth program. Know what a real medical review looks like, and the FDA's red flags for unsafe online sellers and compounded products.

Step 5
Your first 30 days
Treatment starts at a low dose that is raised step by step, so the first month is mostly about getting used to the medicine. Many people lose only a little at first. Know what is typical so slow early progress does not throw you off.
Step 6
Handle side effects
Digestive side effects such as nausea, diarrhea and constipation are the most common, especially after starting or raising a dose. The labels also list rarer, serious risks. Learn what helps and which symptoms need a call to your clinician or urgent care.
Step 7
Eat well on a smaller appetite
When you eat less, each meal needs to count. Expert guidance puts protein, fluids and nutrient-dense foods first, adds fiber gradually and keeps alcohol minimal.

Step 8
Move to protect muscle
Part of the weight lost on GLP-1s is lean mass. Strength training plus enough protein is the best-supported way to limit that, and walking is one of the easiest ways to add daily activity.

Step 9
Plan for plateaus and the long term
Weight loss slows and levels off for most people at some point. Trials show weight tends to come back when GLP-1 treatment stops, so plan the long term with your prescriber.
